Thai Beach @ Avenue K

Perhaps, the second most popular stall in Uncle Ho’s foodcourt (after the most popular stall, Traditional Penang Food) is called Thai Beach. There are scores of meals and combos you can pick from, but I’ll pick my three favourite, regular ones:

Tom Yam Fried Rice
I have always loved the taste of Tom Yam, whether it’s a Tom Yam soup, Tom Yam rice, Tom Yam chicken or Tom Yam anything! The taste of it is simply appetizing!

Tom Yummy Yam!

The Tom Yam Fried Rice is spicy (and very spicy to some), served with one medium-small prawn, several mini squids, shredded carrots and cucumbers, two crackers (well, if you are lucky, then you might just get three), scrambled egg, white broccoli, and a few corns and mini button mushroom.

The rice itself is tasty enough to finish off just like that without the presence of squids, broccoli, etc. However, the prawn is not fresh enough and uhm… I don’t know, taste old? The squids are easily chewed and swallowed, unlike other stalls that serve rubberish, tasteless ones. Anyway, I think the food is slightly expensive, but nevertheless, still an affordable and enjoyable meal at RM5.20.

Thai Style Fried Rice
This meal may be the most popular one ordered by the crowd. Similarly, the rice is tasty and slightly spicy (hey, it’s Thai food after all), served with shredded carrots, cucumbers and egg, two crackers (again, if you’re lucky, you might just get three), fried ikan bilis and chicken flesh covered in dark sauce.

Most Popular Meal

I don’t know what sauce that is, but it sure taste good! I remembered that the initial price was RM 4.50 per meal when the stall was first launched in the food court. Due to its popularity, the current price now stands at RM 4.90, an increase of RM0.40. Still, it’s a good value for you guys who work in the city and crave for a yummy but affordable Thai meal.

Thai Jawa Fried Rice
Likewise, this plate of spicy rice (spicier than the previous two) comes with two crackers (or three), chicken flesh, white cabbage, shredded carrots and cucumbers, topped off with spring onions. When I first ordered this dish last year, it came with a halved lime. It did taste better with the lime juice!

Spicy Jawa!

However, when I ordered this same meal last week, they don’t serve with lime anymore. Sigh. What a waste! Somehow, certain portion of the rice tastes salty. Hmm… now that’s funny, coz there’s no salty fish in sight. Anyway, if you are the kind of eater who likes spicy and salty food, well, this might just be the one for you at RM4.90.

For all the three meals above, the ikan bilis and crackers served may not be as crispy as it looks like. Oh, you might want to order a 100plus or have a bottle of water ready because you may feel thirsty after you have finished half of the rice! Well, at least that’s how I experienced it!

Tasty Pan Mee in the City

For some reason, I have never eaten pan mee before in my life. I noticed that my colleague often ordered the pan mee from this Penang stall at Uncle Ho’s foodcourt in Avenue K. After countless recommendation from him, I decided to try one myself, and I’m loooovvviiiinnng it, baby!

Like any normal pan mee stall, you can either choose to have the dry version (stirred in black sauce) or the wet version (with soup). However, I prefer the dry one, which is served in a rather big bowl of pan mee that is lightly stirred in tasty black sauce with spinach, fried ikan bilis, shredded chicken flesh, spring onion and bats’ ears (that black veggie-like thingy). It also comes with another bowl of soup, sprinkled with spring and fried onions.

But…the texture of the mee is slightly dry (even after you mix it with the sauce) and for a second, I thought, gee…am I eating an edible chewing gum? Not that it’s rubberish, but they both share similar ‘skin’! Ah, fret not, I’d recommend you to douse the mee with several spoonful of soup and mix it evenly with the black sauce (which stays mostly at the bottom of the bowl). That’ll do the trick.

Tasty Mee! ~BURPPPPPP!!!~

Priced at RM4.50, this bowl of pan mee is definitely worth your penny, especially if you work around the KLCC area. However, the queue at this stall tends to grow very long at peak hours and after much observation, I can safely say that this stall has the longest queue of all!

Stall name: Traditional Penang Food
Crowd: The queue usually begins from 12.30pm onwards and most of the time it stretches across the other chicken rice stall next to it. Poor chickie chick stall!
